Michael F. O’Leary, 62, of Newburyport, MA, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born to the late John and Catherine O’Leary, Michael was raised with a deep pride in his Irish heritage and a strong, no-nonsense upbringing. He faced his illness with the same grit, dignity, and unapologetically dry, irreverent wit that defined him. He was a man who lived on his own terms, often with a mischievous spark.
Michael was the partner of the late Christine Ogilvie, who passed away in May of 2024 after her own fierce battle with cancer. During her illness, Michael journeyed devotedly every single step of the way by her side. He missed her deeply each and every day since her passing, carrying forward the love and support they shared in their home. He cherished being a part of Christine’s family and took great pride in the deep bond he formed with her daughters, Tessa Boyle and Carisa Boyle. To them, he was a steady presence, a source of encouragement, and a true member of the family. He leaves behind his siblings Virginia Arpino and her husband Paul of Waltham, David O’Leary and his wife Jen of Medfield, and Christopher O’Leary of Norwood, as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection. He was predeceased by his brother, John P. O'Leary, Jr.
While Michael was never one for pretense or sainthood, his Catholic faith was a guiding force that offered him genuine comfort and peace. He deeply appreciated his priests and doctors who approached their callings with absolute, no-nonsense seriousness—leaving the joking to Michael, who always had a sharp comment ready.
A proud, grateful, and deeply committed member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Michael achieved the incredible milestone of 20 years of continuous sobriety. He immensely valued the fellowship and raw honesty of the Newburyport group, which made a profound difference in his life. True to the program, he faced his own flaws directly. While his sharp edges and unfiltered nature may have rubbed some the wrong way over the years, he genuinely valued reconciliation and sought peace with his past.
He found great joy in living along the Merrimack River in Newburyport, a place that brought him daily moments of beauty and reflection. Known for his skill and resourcefulness, Michael worked as an electrician and was a true jack of all trades. He was always ready to lend a hand, fix what was broken, or share his blunt, practical wisdom. He poured that same meticulous energy into his yard, taking immense pride in maintaining a perfectly manicured lawn. He will be remembered for his fierce independence, his generosity, and the unique, memorable presence he brought into every room.
