Michael Colin Hickey, 48, passed away unexpectedly in his Quincy home on June 24, 2026. Born in Newton, he is survived by his mother Janice, longtime partner, Danielle Christensen, brother Colin, sister in-law Colleen, two nephews, Flynn and Beau, uncles John Dolan and Dennis Dolan, aunts, Beth Dolan, Kathy McDonough and Cathy Hickey. He is predeceased by his father, Charles.
Mike was a lifelong learner who sought knowledge for knowledge's sake. An avid reader, his subject matter covered many topics and ideas. He was a passionate film enthusiast and could recall every actor, director and screenplay writer like an entertainment encyclopedia. He frequented museums and spent hours reading all the information he could get from each collection. His impressive grasp of knowledge allowed him to connect with all people on a personal level. He had a sincerity that made people feel seen and heard.
He also had learned to become an excellent chef, and was proud he ate so well on his budget, always preparing food that was "restaurant quality." With his partner Danielle, Mike was becoming a regular traveler, his last being a trip to London and Scotland.
Michael earned his diploma from Newton South High School. (He was a senior linebacker on the legendary '94 Football team that went 8-2) After, Mike went to St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, where he graduated with a degree in English and later, earned a Master's degree in Library Science from Simmons College in Boston. Following his education he worked first at the Newton Public Library and later at the Boston Public Library. He had worked in the restaurant industry for many years between careers honing his culinary skills before most recently finding a home working for the US Postal Service out of the local South Boston branch. His enthusiasm for his deliveries and kindness to those he interacted with on his walking route gave him much joy.
There will be a wake at the Magni Funeral Home in Newton on Wednesday, July 1, between 6-8p. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be given to St. Francis House and Gavin Foundation. Many people called Mike a friend and he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
