With great sadness, we announce the passing of Edward J. Murphy on December 9, 2025, at Newton Wellesley Hospital, where he was born in 1939.
Ed grew up in Newton, served his country in the U.S. Navy, then joined the Newton Fire Department in 1961. He rose quickly in the ranks, obtained a college degree in fire science, and was appointed Chief in 1993. In retirement, he spent many days on the golf course, fishing, soaking up the sun in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and enjoying a good meal with family and friends. He was a beloved and special man who gave selflessly without expectation. He had a beautiful voice, inspired by his favorite crooner, Jerry Vale. He sang every day, with or without music, loved life, and understood better than most that every moment matters.
Ed was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his partner Angela Clark, 5 children, Edward Jr., Wendy, Barbara, Richard, and Michael, many grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Visiting hours: Monday, December 15 from 4-8pm at the Magni Funeral Home, 365 Watertown St, Newton. Funeral Mass Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 10:30AM in Our Lady’s Parish, 573 Washington St, Newton. Burial to follow at Newton Cemetery.
