Sri Rajagopalan Srinivasan (Cheema), formerly of TVS Group – Sundaram Clayton Limited and Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) Limited, passed away peacefully and attained the lotus feet of Vishnu on April 25, 2025 in Brookline MA, USA.
Srinivasan was the beloved husband of the Smt Kalyani Srinivasan (nee T K Kalyani) and son of Sri K S Rajagopalan (Kumbakonam) and Smt Rajalakshmi Rajagopalan, all of whom predeceased him.
Srinivasan was born in Chennai, lived in Kumbakonam and went to high school in Pudukottai, where he graduated with a gold medal. He was an honors Mechanical Engineering graduate of Guindy Engineering College, Chennai. He had an illustrious career in the Machine Tools Division of Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) Limited in Jalahalli, Bengaluru and then in the Press Division in Hyderabad. Following that, he joined the TVS Group as Group Technical Adviser at Padi, Chennai and then worked in Sundaram Clayton in Chennai and Hosur as the Head of the Railway Products Division.
In 1998, he and his wife moved to the United States to be close to his children and grandchildren. He worked in the US and lived independently until his 90th birthday, (caring for his wife until she passed away in 2015).
Srinivasan was a man of many eclectic interests including Carnatic music, golf (which he played into his mid-80s and watched extensively on TV), American football which he watched avidly and discussed with his grandsons, daily crossword puzzles (from London Times), reading, and watching news and shows on TV. He was also an intrepid traveler and had traveled extensively around the world for both business and pleasure. Of his many travels, he was especially pleased with his stint in Berlin in the 1950s as an engineer trainee.
But, above all, Srinivasan was a loving, attentive, and dutiful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was very instrumental in guiding, helping, and improving the lives of many people, both in his close family and extended circle.
He is very deeply mourned by his three daughters (Rajashri, Jayashri, and Subhashri), sons-in-law (Reuben Besant Raj, V S Balakrishnan, and Ram Srinivasan) and grand children (Medha, Tara, Manav, Rowan, and Rajiv), and grandchildren-in- law (Anirudh Jangalapalli, Evan Moore, Rachel Leshin, and Roxanne Anderson) and great granddaughter (Anya Jangalapalli), brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, many family members, friends and ex-colleagues who will miss him dearly.
