Martha "Mattie" Madden-wife of the late Arnold "Arnie" Madden--passed away peacefully on July 28th, 2026 with her loving family by her side. Martha was 88 years old. Martha was born in Liverpool England in 1937 to the late Margaret and James Wilson. She was the loving sister of the late Margaret Tampsett, James Wilson, Sarah Goulding, Elizabeth Dean, Susan Harrison and Anne Muldoon.
Martha is survived by her loving and devoted sons Craig Madden of Newton, Andrew Madden, his wife Christine of West Yarmouth, Keith Madden, his wife Susan of Framingham and her grandson Ryan Madden, his fiancé Jessica Nadolny of Newton. Martha also had many nieces and nephews she loved and enjoyed spending time with.
Martha immigrated to the United States in 1975 with her husband Arnie and 3 sons. They settled in Newton. Her husband "Arnie passed away suddenly in 1983 and Martha became a single mom of 3 teenage boys. She never remarried and devoted her time taking care of her 3 boys. While taking care
of her sons Martha worked at Newton Wellesley Hospital for many years where she eventually retired. After retirement she volunteered at the Newton Senior Center for several years. She loved being around people and enjoyed the many trips she would take with her family and friends. She enjoyed living in her Newton duplex for 37 years with sons Craig, Andrew, her grandson Ryan and her daughter in law Christine. She loved her yard which she would affectionately call "the garden", hosting cookouts for her family and friends often having relatives over from England and Australia. She enjoyed vacationing with her sister Lil. Taking several trips, one to Hawaii, where she flew in a helicopter over the volcanos and one where she rode elephants, nothing she wouldn't try. Martha or Mattie as most of her close family would call her, would sit in her garden and share stories over a cup of tea with family and friends. She loved her tea and cherished her role as a single mom, loving grandmother and "best friend".
Martha (aka; Nana) had a special bond with her grandson Ryan. They were "best friends" from the day he was born and shared an incredible connection. They would sit for hours drinking tea and talking about the topic of the day or watching an old western movie or show on TV. Nana was kind. considerate, nurturing, loving but she also had her opinion about certain topics and didn't mind using a little foul language to get a point across when needed. Nana enjoyed spending time with Ryan in her backyard eating barbecue, playing in the pool or relaxing on her porch basking in the sun shine. She would enjoy walking around the neighborhood and liked to share any gossip she picked up at the Senior Center that week.
Martha was an incredible mother, grandmother and person. She will be greatly missed by all. Her
memories and the stories of them will be cherished for years to come. We love you.
