James M. Mitchell, passed away at 84 on Jan. 12, 2021 of Watertown and Newton, MA. Son to the late George and Laurena (MacQuarrie) Mitchell-Dunn. His beloved wife and childhood sweetheart of over 60 years the late Janet (Dearden). Father to the late Cynthia Mitchell, daughters Melody Danforth and husband Richard, Heidi Whelan and husband Mark, Grandfather to Colby Whelan and his wife Rachel, Geoffrey Whelan and his wife Brittany, Alexandra Elliot and her husband Brendon, Richard Danforth and his Fiancee Katie McDonnell, Jonathan Danforth and his Fiancee Jennifer Leggett and 5 Great Grandchildren, Avery, Finnley, Olivia, Braxton and Everly. Brother to the late Edward Mitchell and wife Lucy. Brother in law to the late John Dearden, the late Harold Dearden, Gerard Dearden and his wife Patricia and several nieces and nephews.Dear friend to Claude Girouard. James retired after a life time career as an Electrical Drafting Engineer with Raytheon Company. He proudly served his Country in the US Navy during the Korean and Vietnam War on the DDS-770 USS Lowry. He wore his Navy attire hats and shirts with great pride.
A long time member of The American Legion, Post 440, Nonantum, MA. also The National Association of Destroyer Veterans Tin Can Sailors. He enjoyed traveling with many DDS-770 USS Lowry Destroyer Reunions nationally. He was known for his witty sense of humor, his joy for swimming, diving, camping and fishing, his many snow bird years in Florida, his Patriotism to his Country and his loving devotion to his “Bride, Pokey” Janet. Due to the current health crisis Memorial and funeral services will be private.
